A timepiece launched by Panerai at Watches & Wonders 2023 features a new annual calendar movement. This is exciting news because watchmakers would feel particularly comfortable when deciding to build a practical annual calendar movement (as opposed to a simple calendar or a more complex perpetual calendar). As I will explain below, in my opinion the Annual Calendar is a top choice due to its functionality and convenience. I doubt that the Radiomir Annual Calendar will become many people’s first Panerai watch. This product seems to be designed for collectors who are interested in a moderately complex yet functional sport-style watch made from luxurious materials. This may sound niche, but so is the appeal of many luxury timepieces in finding their audience. The goal of most high-end watches isn't to make a lot of people happy. Instead, the goal is to make a few people happy. This is why exclusive production and original design are now very popular as concepts in this field.
A stainless steel or titanium version of this Radiomir Annual Calendar would be a very thoughtful watch at half the price. Availability of such a product is not out of the question, but I think it will be a while before such a product is available. Like many brands in the luxury watch world, Panerai tends to use newer movements in its more expensive watches and then in its more affordable watches. Panerai has every reason to launch a watch with the P.9010/AC automatic movement that sets this mechanism apart.
